DRIVERS who may have witnessed a fatal collision between a lorry and a car on the A46 in the early hours of Tuesday morning are being urged to come forward.
One man died and another was taken to hospital after the crash involving a silver Vauxhall Zafira and a lorry which closed the A46 in both directions between the Twyford roundabout and the Badsey Road roundabout.
The Zafira driver, a man in his 40s died at the scene following the incident which happened at about 12.55am on the bypass, near to where the road crosses the River Avon.
Sgt Craig Harris said an investigation had now been launched to establish the circumstances behind the collision.
“Enquiries are ongoing and we would encourage anyone who saw the vehicles and the manner in which they were being driven prior to the incident to come forward,” he said.
“We are also keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who has dashcam footage of the moments leading up to the collision. The man driving the HGV has been left with serious injuries and remains in hospital.
“Our thoughts are with both families at this difficult time.”
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said both the lorry and the car had suffered ‘significant’ damage’.
“Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that there was nothing that could be done to save the driver of the car and he was confirmed dead at the scene,” he said.
“The lorry driver, a 61-year-old man, was trapped for around 50 minutes. Ambulance staff worked with firefighters to remove him.
“The man had suffered multiple injuries. He was given pain relief and had a leg splinted and wounds dressed before he was taken to the major trauma centre at University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire.
