A Christmas message from Evesham's MP Nigel Huddleston

Evesham Editorial 25th Dec, 2019   0

We’ve had a strange run-up to Christmas in the world of politics and I’ve spent most of Advent away from Westminster, delivering leaflets, canvassing and holding meetings in the constituency instead in the run up to the first December General Election in nearly a hundred years.

Then in a crammed week following the General Election we had the state opening of parliament, the Queens’ speech and passed the EU withdrawal bill. Now we have a short break and some time to breathe!

It is worth reflecting on what has been a tumultuous year.  We not only had an election, but a change of Prime Minister, and enacted legislation that should and will have an impact for decades to come; for example: enshrining into law a commitment to be net neutral by 2050 and making new spending commitments on the NHS and schools.

It is appropriate at this time of year that we thank all those who spend time away from their loved ones in the armed forces, emergency services and all other services that enable us to feel safe and secure and enjoy ourselves over the festive season.

It is also a time for us to reflect on the less fortunate members of our society who may not be able to enjoy themselves or who may be without friends and family over the holiday period.  Loneliness can be particularly acute at holiday times.  All of us should take time to help those in need and reach out to those who otherwise may spend time alone.

Christmas is a time for reflection but also celebration and I hope that all my constituents are able to enjoy themselves over the holiday period.  I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
