THE OFFICIAL start of the British asparagus season will be marked with much merriment next week at the historic Fleece Inn in Bretforton.
A lively launch on St George’s Day (Tuesday, April 23) from 9.15am will feature music, Morris dancing and special guest appearances from Gus the Asparagus Man and even St George himself will be on hand to lead the day’s festivities.
This year’s festivities come with an exciting twist – the first hundred of gras will make a momentous journey to the Japanese Embassy in London, celebrating the recent Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status granted to Evesham Asparagus in Japan.

Over the years, the British Asparagus Festival has presented the hundred of gras to iconic venues, including Buckingham Palace, Worcester Cathedral, the European Parliament, and the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
The 2025 diplomatic delivery to Japan is a new chapter in the ongoing recognition of Evesham Asparagus as a prized British export.
Angela Taylor, director of the British Asparagus Festival CIC, said: “The PGI status of Evesham Asparagus in Japan is a major milestone for our region. We’re proud to not only celebrate this exceptional produce locally but also share it with the world.”
