An EVESHAM-BASED plant hire company has launched a dedicated training school aimed at finding the road planer operators of the future.
Jet Plant Hire, which has a head office in Vale Park, has devised a nine-month programme specifically designed to address the highways and construction industry’s demand for the next generation of skilled professionals.
Trainees are assessed throughout the process and guaranteed a permanent job if they pass four appraisals. And the first two Worcestershire recruits have already begun their tuition.
Tyler Rock, 25, from Evesham, had a variety of different jobs from working in pubs to delivery driving before joining the company. Four months into his training, he said: “I didn’t know much about road planning before I joined but I’m so glad that I’m part of this world now.
“It’s been a brilliant challenge so far as I’ve had the chance to learn from experienced colleagues and develop invaluable new skills. I also particularly like the positive approach to mental health at the business, with everyone on the team very supportive of each other.”
Former bricklayer, Cameron Powton loves the travelling aspect of the job. The 24-year-old from Bromsgrove, said:
“I’ve worked in Barnstaple, Chichester, Swindon and Bristol already. It’s been great to work alongside talented colleagues in a variety of different places.
“I feel very well looked after here and everyone has had a lot of time for me as I learn the trade. I’d encourage anybody considering this industry to give it a go. I have and I haven’t looked back.”
Under the guidance of expert colleagues, participants gain hands-on experience with the intricacies of road planing – a technique used to allow the complete removal of a road surface layer, allowing a new surface to be directly overlaid to it.
Managing director Sean Witheford, said: “We’re very proud to launch our dedicated training school. Graduates will not only acquire skills essential for the road planing industry but also benefit from a structured career path, competitive remuneration, and a clear trajectory toward permanent employment and continued professional growth within the sector.
“As Jet Plant looks towards the future, the training school represents a commitment to investing in the workforce and ensuring a continued pipeline of skilled professionals who can contribute to the industry’s development.”
