FIVE-hundred coronavirus patients have returned home to their families after receiving treatment at Worcestershire’s hospitals.

Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust which covers the Alexandra Hospital, Worcestershire Royal and Kidderminister Hospital, announced the figure on Twitter today.

The coronavirus R rate in England recently fell below the crucial threshold of 1.

The R rate represents the average number of people one infected person will pass Covid-19 on to.

Above 1 and an epidemic is growing, below one is an indication the outbreak is beginning to shrink.

Matthew Hopkins, chief executive of the trust said: “Our staff are doing a magnificent job in working to get patients through one of the most challenging periods in the history of the NHS.

“We are delighted that 500  patients could be safely discharged home and we wish them all a continued positive recovery.

“This is a huge morale boost for our staff who are working day in day out to provide the best possible care for our patients.”

Mr Hopkins added that it is important local people continue to do everything they can to reduce the pressure on county hospitals by following government guidelines.
