AN 18-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in connection with a spate of fires in Evesham.

The teenager, from Evesham, has been released on police bail until Monday, March 20.

Police investigations into the number of fires in the early hours of Sunday morning (March 5) are continuing.

Between 2am and 3.30am, four fire crews from Evesham, Pershore, Pebworth and Broadway were called out to tackle the blazes.

Officers from West Mercia Police were first called to Hopkiln Gardens where a number of wheelie bins had been set on fire. A commercial wheelie bin had also been set alight in Queens Road.

Around the same time a front gate to a property on Avon Street and a fir tree in the Albert Road area had been set on fire, as well as damage to wheelie bins at a property on the High Street.

Inspector Louise Wall of West Mercia Police said: “Our Safer Neighbourhood Teams have been conducting reassurance patrols in the area and police are currently investigating the incidents and working to establish the cause of the fires.

“These incidents are being treated as suspicious at this time and we are remaining open minded into possible links between them.

“I urge anyone who saw suspicious behaviour in the areas at the times mentioned to contact police on 101, quoting incident number 117s of Sunday, March 5.”
