1,400 couples had weddings cancelled in first lockdown

A STAGGERING amount of weddings were cancelled in Worcestershire when the first lockdown was announced.

In March, 1,400 couples were left uncertain about if their big day would go ahead.

But since then 465 couples have been able to get married, albeit on a smaller scale.

When marriage and civil partnership services were able to resume in July, it was all hands on deck for Worcestershire County Council to ensure scheduled ceremonies went ahead safely.

Worcestershire residents Thomas Hawthorne and Jemma Sear were able to get married in July.

Their wedding venue in Kidderminster went to great lengths to ensure the two-metre social distancing requirements and Covid-19 safety measures were met.

County Councillor Lucy Hodgson, cabinet member with responsibility for communities said: “We are so fortunate here in Worcestershire to have diligent Registration Services which are committed to ensuring couples have a celebration to remember.”
