Screening marks an anniversary

PERSHORE’S Number 8 arts centre will be holding a commemorative screening on Sunday, March 24, to mark the 75th anniversary of the prisoner of war escape from the Luftwaffe-run Stalag Luft III prison in German-occupied Poland.

The event will be hosted by Dan Snow at the Eventim Apollo in London and broadcast live via satellite to Number 8.

The screening will then be followed by the 1963 cult film The Great Escape starring Steve McQueen.

Britains’ Got Talent finalists The D-Day Darlings will also feature, performing classics such as The White Cliffs of Dover and Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree, alongside a specially created arrangement of the iconic theme tune.

Dan Snow will be hearing from veterans of the Second World War’s most daring escape and will be joined by renowned historian Paul Beaver and Dr Hugh Hunt from the University of Cambridge to explore the history and science behind the operation.

The triumph TR6 motorcycle ridden by Steve McQueen is also set to make an appearance on stage.

Tickets are £12 for members of Number 8’s Friends scheme and £13 for non-members and are available by visiting number8.org or by calling 01386 555488.
