"Lakhta Center 2": the second tallest building in the world will be built in St. Petersburg

Evesham Editorial 2nd Jun, 2021

AN ULTRA-high skyscraper designed by the Kettle Collective bureau will be built in St. Petersburg. It will be just below the Burj Khalifa, but it will contain the world’s highest observation deck.

The design of the new skyscraper was carried out by the Scottish bureau Kettle Collective. Its architects also worked on the construction of “Lakhta Center”, and it is still the highest structure in Russia. “Lakhta Center 2” will be located on the outskirts of St. Petersburg, next to the already established headquarters of Gazprom (462 m). The tower will significantly exceed its height and is going to reach 703 m. This is 125 m lower than the Dubai skyscraper Burj Khalifa, but 71 m higher than the Shanghai Tower, which is now the second-tallest structure in the world.

Nevertheless, “Lakhta Center 2” is still going to achieve two records: the highest observation deck and the highest occupied floor will be located here (it will be at the level of 590 m). The architects of Kettle Collective have already shown the design of the skyscraper, and its spiral glass facade will be enclosed in a metal exoskeleton.

The structure will meet all the policies of sustainable construction. “Its design is both aesthetic and functional, as it will reduce the force of the wind on the building and reduce the number of structural elements required for a skyscraper”, says the founder of the bureau, Tony Kettle.

The building will house offices created with a modern concept “live, work and have fun”. It will be a vertical city, consisting of eight segments with sixteen floors each. All segments will have a three-level atrium with public spaces and green spaces. In the core of the skyscraper will be located innovative single-car elevators, powered by energy from their motion.

About “Lakhta Center”

“Lakhta Center” with a height of 462 m has become the highest building in Europe. The key objective of the building should be the headquarters of Gazprom, mainly known in Europe for the partnership with the UEFA Champions League, according to https://bookmaker-ratings.com/bonuses/ and other sources.

According to the developer’s plans, office premises will be mainly concentrated in the tower and occupy 129.9 thousand square meters on 86 floors. Another 10 thousand square meters of office space are located in the premises of a multifunctional building.

This year, “Lakhta Center” won four designations in the principal global prize in the field of unique high-rise architecture and residential construction: The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) Awards 2021. The international jury recognized “Lakhta Center” as the best project in the Facades of High-Rise Buildings nomination. According to the results of the general voting of the conference participants, the skyscraper also won in the nominations “The best high-rise building in Europe”, “Construction of high-rise buildings” and “The best building with a height of more than 400 m”.
