RESIDENTS are reminded they need to spend all their old style ’round’ pound coins by 11.59pm on Sunday, October 15.

The coin will no longer be legal tender from then and shops and businesses will no longer accept them.

People will, however, be able to take them to their bank or donate them to certain charities.

Businesses or people banking the old coins will need to do in separate bags containing just the round pounds.

Some interesting facts about the new pound coin

The round pound was replaced this year with the new distinctive 12-sided one.

It is bimetallic – made of two metals – with the outer one gold (nickel-brass) and the inner ring silver (nickel-plated alloy).

The new coins have a hologram like image that change the £ to a number 1.

There is also mico-lettering on the lower inside rim on both sides of the coin and there is a hidden high security feature which will protect the new pound from being counterfeited.
