Warriors wave goodbye to 'Bressie' as Anton leaves Sixways

Evesham Editorial 5th Dec, 2021

WARRIORS have agreed to release lock Anton Bresler so that he can take up a contract with French Top 14 club Racing 92 with immediate effect.

Bresler, 33, joined Warriors from Edinburgh Rugby in December 2017 and made 64 appearances in his time at Sixways, his most recent as a replacement in the Premiership Rugby Cup victory over Bristol Bears two weeks ago.

“It is fantastic for Bressie, at this point in his career, to have been given the opportunity to experience playing in France,” said Warriors director of rugby Alan Solomons.

“I have worked with Bressie both at Edinburgh and here at Worcester. He is one of the finest men I have come across in rugby. He is not only a very good player, but an exceptional team man, who adds value wherever he goes. That has certainly been the case here at Worcester.

“I will miss him, but at the same time am really pleased that he has been given this opportunity. All of us here at Warriors wish him well in his new venture and he will always be welcome here at Sixways.”

Namibia-born Bresler played for Sharks in South Africa before joining Edinburgh in 2014.

During his time with Warriors Bresler became a popular member of the squad and made his 50th appearance against Harlequins at Sixways in August 2020.

He sustained a foot injury at the end of last season which required surgery and ruled him out for the first two months of this season.

“It is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Bressie,” said Warriors head coach Jonathan Thomas.

“We are obviously disappointed to lose such a quality player but, most importantly, an outstanding person from our squad.

“At the same time we are pleased for Bressie that, at this stage of his career, he has got the opportunity to play in the Top 14 for Racing.

“I know the last 12 months have been tough for Bressie with the injuries he has had so this move is huge for him.

“I wish him and his family all the best and thank him for his efforts and commitment to the club and being such an important part of the Warriors family for the past four years.”

On the field Warriors continued their fine recent form with a nail-biting 32-31 victory over Wasps at Sixways yesterday (Saturday).
