Solomons aiming to finish with intent

WARRIORS chief Alan Solomons has called for his side to finish the protracted 2019/20 Gallagher Premiership season strongly ahead of the Sixways side’s final game of the campaign.

After defeating fallen Premiership giants Saracens 40-27 at Sixways on Wednesday (September 30), Warriors end the campaign on Sunday with a visit to Sale some five months after the original season was due to finish.

Failure to pick enough points in their final two games could see Warriors finish as low as 11th with only relegated Saracens below them – a club docked a total of 105 points and demoted to the Championship by Premiership bosses for financial irregularities.

Speaking ahead of the Sarries clash, Solomons said he wanted his side to finish the campaign on a high but admitted the final two games would provide his side with tough challenges.

“Sale are a very powerful side with a strong contingent of Springboks so it will be another tough challenge,” he said.

“We will put out a good side against Saracens on Wednesday and then assess everyone on Thursday before we select for Sale.”

The Saracens clash will see Warriors take to the field for the first time in 17 days and Solomons said the break following the London Irish win was welcome after a spell of seven games in just 29 days after English rugby’s top flight emerged from the Coronavirus shutdown.

Solomons labelled the 2019/20 season as ‘strange’ because of the five-month hiatus imposed on the sport because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

“The real positives are we have had the opportunity to blood a lot of our younger players and that our new coaching team have been able to bleed in their systems,” he said.

“Next season will be action-packed but we won’t be playing seven matches in four weeks as we have done recently. The highest position the club has finished in the Premiership is eighth so I certainly think that next season we should be looking at that and to better it.”

WARRIORS will kick off the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership season with a home match against London Irish at Sixways on Saturday, November 21 (3pm).

Warriors completed a double over the Exiles with a 40-25 victory at their temporary home at The Stoop earlier this month and will have an early opportunity to make it three in a row following the announcement of next season’s fixtures.
