Taking a stroll through military history

MEMBERS of Evesham Rambling Club laced up their walking boots and took to the great outdoors in the Cotswolds for the group’s first ramble of the year.

A group of twenty one members, plus a welcome guest, started from Chipping Campden and headed out along the Heart of England Way before diverting off towards Hidcote. On a fine but chilly morning the group encountered a number of fellow ramblers and dog walkers.

The walk route took the group past a memorial to ‘The Belgian Soldier’. This curious carving in a tree was made by a Belgian soldier who was recovering from wounds suffered in the First World War. He billeted in Norton Hall, Mickleton which had been converted to a hospital.

At the conclusion of the ramble the group retired to the Lygon Arms Hotel for their annual midweek lunch. Here they were joined by other senior members of the club for an excellent meal and the opportunity to catch up on all the news after a long break from walking over the festive period.

This friendly club, which was founded in 1947, has a regular programme of walks including each month two Wednesday walks of approximately five and 10 miles and a Sunday Ramble (12-14 miles). New members are always welcome.

Guests can also walk with the club although this is limited to a maximum of three walks due to insurance restrictions.

After the club’s successful launch of the ‘Round Evesham Walk’ in 2018, members are now busily preparing for its inaugural Evesham Walking Festival, which takes place between July 1 and 7.
