THE CROWDS turned out last weekend to catch a glimpse of the Vale of Evesham Morris festival.

The event, now in its 21st year, involved 500 morris dancers from 36 sides dancing different genres, including Border, Cotswold, Mumming, Molly Dancing, Northwest and Rapper.

Venues across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire hosted different groups of dancers between Friday, June 21 and Sunday, June 23.

In Evesham, crowds flocked to the Rowing Club, the Red Lion, the Fleece Inn in Bretforton, All Saints Church, Market Place and Abbey Park and Abbey Gardens to see the Morris dancing spectacles.

There were also nearby performances in Worcester, Broadway, Droitwich, Alcester and Feckenham.

As sides danced, a special Quarter Peal rung from the 16th century bell tower by members of the Four Shires Guild of Bell Ringers on Saturday.

A talk by the Abbey Trust explored the history of Evesham Abbey on the Sunday morning.

As the festival drew to a close, the “Evesham Stick” was presented by the Mayor to the side which best-demonstrated the ‘spirit of the morris’.
