PEOPLE across Worcestershire were wowed by a rare opportunity to see the Northern Lights.

These dramatic pictures were taken by photographer Tarquin Shaw-Young at Base Camp on the Malvern Hills and from his home in the town.

The chance to see the much sought-after sight of the Aurora Borealis because of a severe geomagnetic storm hitting Europe.

Some experts said last night and tonight into tomorrow morning was the best chance to see the spectacle in many places in the UK for more than 20 years.

The Aurora Borealis, are typically associated with regions closer to the Arctic Circle, such as Norway or Iceland and it is very rare but not impossible to see them in the UK, especially during periods of strong geomagnetic activity.

The best chances of catching them in the UK usually are in the northernmost parts of Scotland, away from light pollution, and during periods of high solar activity.
