Call to return patient aids after some found for sale on social media

A SERVICE providing equipment and mobility aids to patients in Worcestershire is calling for the public to return equipment when it’s no longer needed.

The Integrated Community Equipment Service, provided by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust is asking people to return things like as zimmer frames, commodes, toilet frames and perching stools.

These items may have been issued for recovery following illness or operation as well as for longer term functional support.

The service can collect, repair and sanitise NHS issued equipment in preparation for future use.

Recycling equipment not only saves the health and social care system money, but it reduces the likelihood of equipment ending up in landfill and helps to reduce the Trust’s carbon footprint.

Manager Anna Evans said: “We’re encouraging patients and their families to return equipment when it is no longer required.

“There is a misconception that we don’t accept equipment back, and often items end up collecting dust in storage or going into landfill.

“By returning your equipment you’re not only helping other patients, but helping us to reduce our impact on the planet.”

The service was shocked to find a number of their items recently for sale on social media, and raised concerns about the potential harm of using equipment which hasn’t been issued by healthcare professionals.

“Not only does it cost us money to replace equipment which isn’t returned, our items are clinically prescribed for the intended recipient and anyone else using equipment could potentially hurt themselves,” said Anne.

NHS issued equipment can be returned to the service’s warehouse located on Crown Lane, Wychbold between 9am and 3pm Monday to Friday. Alternatively, collections can be arranged by calling 01527 869104 or visiting the services website: www.hacw.nhs.uk/services/service/integrated-community-equipment-service-44
