Action being taken to fix issues raised by inspectors

WEST Mercia’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) has said he has ‘already taken action’ to make some of the improvements outlined following a Police Effectiveness, Efficiency and Legitimacy (PEEL) inspection.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabularies and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS) graded three areas that needed improvement in the report.

They are investigating crime efficiently, responding to the public and improving operating efficiency through technology and data.

PCC John Campion said he has now increased investment for investigating crime to ensure the force has the resources to examine incidents thoroughly.

“My focus will always be on the victim, and ensuring they get the very best service from West Mercia Police and the justice they deserve,” he said.

“This report has highlighted a number of areas where the standard is below what our communities and I expect.

“The force must take action to improve and I am reassured to see that this is already happening.

“I will continue to hold the Chief Constable to account to ensure these improvements are made as swiftly as possible.”

Chief Constable Pippa Mills said she welcomed the report.

“Improvement work has already begun and is progressing at pace,” she said.

“This includes a focus on the standard of investigations and providing a better service to victims through improved and meaningful contact.

“We still need to do more to improve supervision of investigations and the quality and consistency of updating victims.”

The report commended the force’s innovative practice in early crime intervention and prevention.

It also praised the investment in the Victim Advice Line to provide specialist support and West Mercia’s approach to problem solving.

The introduction of the Local Policing Community Charter was recognised as improving visibility and accessibility.
