OPINION: Evesham needs practical solutions to improve traffic flow

Traffic has a way of dominating local conversation. Roadworks, or even an accident on the M5 motorway causes repercussions for our town’s traffic.

Evesham is unique in that it is hugged by the river Avon, with limited crossings, and the Twyford roundabout north of Greenhill (located within my district) is a key gateway that sees its fair share of traffic congestion.

It’s my view that there are a number of practical and deliverable improvements that could be made to improve traffic flow in this area. One relatively simple change would be to revisit the lane layout, particularly from the Norton entrance.

At present, the left lane is left-only to the A46 north. I believe this should be revised so that the left lane serves both the A46 north and access to The Valley and services.




This would ease pressure on the right-hand lane and help traffic move more freely through the junction.

When coupled with the proper use of ‘no entry’ yellow criss-cross boxes, this could significantly improve the way traffic moves on and off the roundabout during busy periods.


Many residents will know that David Lloyd Leisure currently has a live planning application to develop a new facility to the rear of The Valley’s north car park.

I am supportive of this investment. It would broaden our local leisure offer, support health and wellbeing, and signal that the town is building in momentum for positive change.

This proposal sits alongside other encouraging local initiatives, including Wychavon’s work to bring the Riverside Shopping Centre into public ownership and redevelop it, as well as the long-awaited cycle route from Common Road to The Valley.

As The Valley looks to attract further vehicle and pedestrian use, I see this as an opportunity to address the wider traffic challenges proactively, rather than simply reacting to issues that will inevitably worsen.

I have therefore begun conversations with key stakeholders to explore practical solutions. I have put forward two options for slip road access from the A46 southbound, aimed at relieving pressure on the roundabout and better separating The Valley, services, and David Lloyd Leisure traffic from the junction itself.

I have also raised the need for safe pedestrian access. At present, aside from the proposed Common Road to The Valley cycle route, pedestrians have to navigate over multiple roads and a dual carriageway. Ideally, this would be addressed through a dedicated pedestrian bridge.

These proposals are ambitious and require positive collaboration from all parties involved. It is also worth noting that the A46 falls under the responsibility of National Highways, which adds an additional layer of complexity. I shall provide updates on progress.
