RESIDENTS in Pershore say they ‘feel young again’ thanks to inclusive sports and physical activity sessions taking place in the heart of the community.
Freedom Activities, a not-for-profit organisation providing a variety of recreational sports and games has been able to expand its sessions so people of all ages and abilities can take part in activities that support both physical and mental wellbeing.
The group has been able to increase its programme thanks to a Worcestershire County Council Public Health community wellbeing grant to run walking netball and football groups, Boccia and ‘young at heart’ exercise classes.
Importantly, participants have reported feeling healthier, more confident, and less isolated, with many attendees forming lasting friendships and rediscovering a sense of belonging.
Mike, who is diagnosed with Parkinson’s, explained how the walking football group helps him: “It has been a lifesaver for me, suddenly I met 20 guys in the same boat as me. We all help each other and have a great time together”
Dr Lisa McNally, director of Public Health at Worcestershire County Council, said: “Across Worcestershire, there’s a growing need for opportunities that help people stay socially and physically active, especially those who face barriers to participation due to age, ability, or isolation.
“Our Public Health Community Grant programme helps us to give communities across the county the support they need to set up amazing and life-changing initiatives like this one.
“We are so proud of our grant programme and Freedom Activities CIC is a shining example of how targeted support can unlock potential, reduce health inequalities, and build stronger, more connected communities.”
Neil, another regular walking football attendee, added: “It takes you back, makes you feel young again, like the old days.”
