AN APPEAL has been launched to help one of Evesham’s most iconic buildings get a new roof.

The public are being asked to support the retiling of the Grade 1-listed Almonry Museum by sponsoring a roof slate.

An individual slate made of Cotswold stone costs £10 and all the names of the sponsors will be published in a roll of honour book. They can also be dedicated to a deceased family member or pet.

Museum manager Ashleigh Jayes said: “We’re really excited to launch our Sponsor a Slate scheme. The Almonry is such an important building to the history of Evesham and we want as many people as possible to be a part of its future.

“By sponsoring and dedicating a slate they will not only help to secure the future of this amazing place but it will also serve as a lasting memory to a loved one.”

The 600-year building at Abbey Gate is in need of significant repair and will be closing on September 20 for approximately two years for a complete renovation including a new roof.

A specialist heritage roofing consultant estimates that 40 per cent of the current roof tiles can be salvaged and reused.

During the closure the current tourist information and shop will relocate across the road to 1 to 3 Merstow Green (former Sheldon Bosley Knight office).
