Commemorations in Pershore began with town crier Robert Speight who spearheaded the proceedings with a proclamation at Chapman Court at 11am.

Later, members of Pershore Town Council and Pershore Royal British Legion were joined by Canon Claire Lording, Deputy Lieutenant Major General Mark Armstrong, and Captain Anthony Nero from the Canadian Embassy to lay a wreath of remembrance in Pershore Abbey.

Refreshments were enjoyed in the town hall until 1pm and in the evening, Pershore Town Council and Royal British Legion were joined by hundreds of residents to celebrate the lighting of the beacon at 9pm on Abbey Park.

A debut performance from the female singing trio, The Spitfires, sang songs from the 1940s to entertain the crowds before the beacon was lit.

This was preceded by the newly elected Mayor of Pershore, Councillor Julie Hemming, who read a moving tribute to remember those who served their country in so many ways.

Town clerk Charlie McIntyre said: “Pershore Town Council would like to thank all of those who took part in our VE Day celebrations on May 8.

“The day was a resounding success, with over 150 joining for tea and cake at the town hall in the morning and around 400 joining the lighting of the beacon in the evening.

“It was wonderful to partner up with the Pershore branch of the Royal British Legion to remember this special day.”
