Volunteers needed to keep historic Evesham church open to public

Lise Evans 1st May, 2025   0

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help keep the 13th Century St Lawrence’s Church open for visitors each weekend.

The Churches Conservation Trust is appealing for members of the public with a spare couple of hours to take on the role of  ‘welcome stewards’ once a month.

St Lawrence’s stands in the historic centre of Evesham and was built in 1295. It stood next to the former Abbey and would have been visited by the monks over the centuries.

The post will involve meeting and greeting visitors into the historic building and helping them enjoy the tranquil space. Volunteers will be required to learn about the church and be able to answer simple questions about its history.

They may also undertake some light housework to keep the place looking fresh.

Local community officer Tracy Genever said: “We want to share this building with locals and tourists by having it open to the public as much as possible, and we need volunteers to help us do this.”

Individuals do not have to be a practicing Christian to step forward.

Churches Conservation Trust is a charity that cares for redundant and historic English churches. It currently cares for more than 357 buildings.
