A DIPLOMATIC delivery of Vale asparagus to the Japanese Embassy last Wednesday (April 23) rounded off a day of festivities that marked the beginning of the British asparagus season.

What started at The Fleece Inn, Bretforton with Morris dancing, song and merriment ended in Westminster, London with the presentation of the first hundred of gras to celebrate the recent protected geographical indication (PGI) status granted to Evesham asparagus in Japan.

This new standing means that one of Britain’s most beloved seasonal delicacies is now safeguarded in Japan, ensuring authenticity and protecting it from imitation in one of the world’s most dynamic food markets.

The visit not only spotlighted England’s patron saint but also the launch of the British Asparagus Festival, a celebration of heritage, flavour, and the rich agricultural traditions of Worcestershire’s Vale of Evesham.

The party, which included Gus the Asparagus Man, Saint George (minus his dragon), and landlord of The Fleece, Nigel Smith, head of the British Asparagus Festival were joined by in London by MP Nigel Huddleston.

“It’s wonderful to see our local produce being recognised on the world stage. Vale of Evesham asparagus is not just delicious, it’s a symbol of community pride, rural tradition, and agricultural excellence. I’m delighted to see it joining the ranks of other iconic British foods now protected in Japan,” said Mr Huddleston.

With Japan being the world’s fourth-largest economy and home to a population of 124 million consumers, the move opens significant opportunities for Vale farmers and growers.

Additionally, the embassy celebration has helped reinforce growing cultural and culinary ties between Japan, the UK and Worcestershire, and heralds a new chapter in the ongoing recognition of Evesham asparagus as a prized British export.

Over the years, the British Asparagus Festival has presented the hundred of gras to iconic venues, including Buckingham Palace, Worcester Cathedral, the European Parliament, and the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
