A MAN in Drakes Broughton has been jailed for more than three years for raping and sexually assaulting a girl.
Joshua Newell, 33, of Peach Avenue, Drakes Broughton, was found guilty of rape of a girl under 16 and sexual assault of a girl at a trial in February,
The rape occurred between 2005 and 2007 and the sexual assault happened between 2007 and 2008. He was under 16 at the time of the offences.
Today (Friday, April 25) at Worcester Crown Court, Newell was sentenced to three years and six months for these crimes as well as for possessing indecent images and extreme pornographic content, which he pleaded guilty to.
He was also ordered to register as a sex offender indefinitely. His age at the time of the offences was taken into consideration for sentencing.
The latter were convictions for making one Category A indecent image of a child and making two Category B indecent images of a child.
Newell was also convicted of possessing extreme pornographic images. He was in posession of 14 videos which portrayed, in an explicit and realistic way, a person performing an act of intercourse with a live animal.
The conviction defines the images in law as being grossly offensive, disgusting or otherwise of an obscene character which a reasonable person would believe the people or animals in the videos were real.
Those three offences were committed between 2016 and 2022. He was further ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115 at court today.
Detective Constable Ian Jones of Hereford CID said: “We are pleased to get this sentencing for these horrific sexual crimes and would like to praise the courage of the victim and those affected by his actions for their bravery in coming forward.
“We hope this successful prosecution shows we always take people who think they are a victim of sexual offences seriously, no matter how long ago they may have taken place and will do our utmost to secure a prosecution and conviction against those perpetrating these crimes.”
