WEST WORCESTERSHIRE MP Dame Harriett Baldwin has welcomed a Government commitment to ensure UK aid will help people affected by the earthquakes in Myanmar.
The Disaster Emergency Committee has launched an appeal for funds to support the international relief efforts across South East Asia including the war-torn country which was at the epicentre of the earthquake last month.
The MP quizzed Government Ministers about plans to match donations with international aid support. Millions of people across the region have been left without food or shelter and UK donations will be matched by the Government up to a maximum of £5 million.
On March 28, at around 1pm, a 7.7 to 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Sagaing region of Myanmar, with an epicenter close to Mandalay, the country’s second largest city.
Since the large quake, several aftershocks have been felt in Kyaukse, Kyauk Myaung, Meiktila and Magway ranging from 3.5 and 4.7 in magnitude.
The official death toll from the earthquake disaster has surpassed 3,600, with more than 5,000 people injured and lots more declared missing. Rescue efforts have been hampered by extreme weather.
Dame Harriett said: “I asked Ministers how the good people of West Worcestershire could donate to this tragic humanitarian disaster and I am pleased they have stepped up and arranged a very generous way to donate, so that you receive not only Gift Aid but a matching donation.
“The Disaster Emergency Committee appeal means that 15 partner charities are able to work together to mobilise a community response and I am confident that many generous local people will want to support this if they can.”
