EVESHAM Rowing Club’s junior scullers enjoyed a fine start to the 2025 racing season at the West Midlands Junior Championships.

Some 24 of the club’s junior rowers raced on the River Wye in Hereford in glorious conditions.

The all girls crew and boys J16 quad won medals with many of the athletes taking to the water for the first time.

Some of the girls’ scullers took on new challenges, racing in new categories while other made their debuts as coxes and steers of boats.

The girls’ under-13 coxed quad crew of Amelia, Leah, Alani and Alicia, with Eva at cox, rowed to victory in their event in an impressive time of 7 minutes 25 seconds.

Another close race saw the girls’ under-14 coxed quad of Lucy, Darcey, Harriet and Amelia, with Jess L at cox, finish just 0.9 seconds behind the winning crew in 7 mins 1 sec.

The girls’ under-15 coxed quad of Eva, Inky, India and Fred, with Thea at cox, also finished second out of seven crews in 6 mins 30 secs.

And the girls’ under-16 coxed quad of Jess, Zara, Lexi and Thea finished third in their race with a time of 6 mins 27 secs.

The boys’ under-16 quad of Thomas, Freddy, Lloyd and Archie also placed second in their race in a time of 6 mins 12 secs.

And the boys’ under-13 double crew, made up of Stan and Tommy, crossed the line in 7 mins 18 secs in their first-ever race.

Evesham rower Daisy represented the club in a composite boat with Stratford and won the girls’ under-15 quad event.

Club coach Ashley Ford said: “It was a fantastic day for junior members of Evesham Rowing Club, and we are really proud of all our competitors.

“To see so many new faces racing so well, especially in their first competitive events, is a testament to their hard work and dedication to training over the winter months. The results today show the incredible potential within our squad and we look forward with excitement into the 2025 racing season.”

Fellow Evesham coach, Carol Lovelock added: “Rowing is such a rewarding sport. It helps develop teamwork, discipline, and resilience, and it’s amazing to watch our young athletes grow not only in skill but also in confidence.

“I’m excited to see where they go from here.”
