COMMUNITY-MINDED citizens in Evesham could have the opportunity to play their part in shaping the town’s future by becoming a councillor.
A notice of vacancy for Bengeworth ward has been posted on behalf of Evesham Town Council following the death of long-standing councillor and former mayor Alan Booth who died on January 26.
The so-called ‘casual vacancy’ is the statutory local government term for a vacant seat that arises as a result of a resignation, death or disqualification of a councillor outside of the usual four-year election cycle.
For an election to go ahead, any 10 electors within the ward need to have requested to have the vacancy filled by an election by writing to the returning officer at Wychavon District Council before March 7.
Such notice must be sent to Vic Allison, Returning Officer, Civic Centre, Queen Elizabeth Drive, Pershore, WR10 1PT.
If less than 10 requests are made, the vacancy will be filled by co-option – meaning interested parties will put themselves forward for consideration directly to the town council with councillors themselves deciding who would be the most suitable person.
Evesham Town Council has various roles including being a statutory consultee on planning matters, is responsible for looking after the Almonry, providing floral displays in the town centre and gives grants to local community groups and events including the River Festival.
Councillors, who volunteer their time for the good of the community, are expected to attend monthly council meetings held on the second Monday of the month and potentially join a sub committee such as planning and estates or finance.
They are also expected to adhere to a strict code of conduct including the Nolan principles which are ethical standards expected of all public office holders.
The council comprises 24 councillors representing the eight wards of Abbey, Avon, Bengeworth, Fairfield, Great Hampton, Little Hampton, Twyford and South, and is administered by a small team of officers led by town clerk.
If an election is called it will take place not later than May 14, 2025.
