THE MP for Droitwich and Evesham, Nigel Huddleston recently joined the Churches Conservation Trust for a visit to the beautiful and historic St Lawrence Church in its care.

The medieval church in Market Place, Evesham is an exceptional part of the town’s heritage, and the visit highlighted the importance of preserving such landmarks for future generations.

This large and imposing church fell into ruin in the 18th century and but was rescued and restored again by the local architect H Eginton in 1836.

Inside, the chantry chapel of St Clement has richly panelled arches and a beautiful fan vaulted ceiling. The windows contain remarkable glass by many of the major stained glass artists of the last 150 years.

During the visit, Mr Huddleston praised the Churches Conservation Trust for its dedication to safeguarding historic churches, chapels and meeting houses for local communities.

Speaking about the broader significance of this work, he said: “Our historic churches have served as focal points for their local communities for tens, hundreds, and even thousands of years. Across the country, historic parish churches are the lifeblood of the communities they serve.”

The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss the importance of ensuring that historic places of worship remain hubs for their communities.

Reflecting on the value of preserving such spaces, Mr. Huddleston added: “Supporting historic churches protects our cultural heritage and our community cohesion. These buildings are vital assets, treasured for their heritage, community, and social value.”
