A CHARITY in Evesham that supports people with mental health issues is urging people to seek support if they are suffering.
Evesham and District Mental Health Support Services (EDMHSS) based in Church Street offers face-to-face counselling and information to members of the public who are concerned about their or a loved one’s mental health.
With the third Monday in the month, Blue Monday, allegedly the ‘most depressing day of the year’ nearly here, the charity says it is a reminder to focus on mental health and wellbeing.
Manager Sally Dance told the Observer that it’s sometimes easier to talk to a stranger than to relatives or friends and individuals should not feel embarrassed to get some help.
She explained that during a session a counsellor will listen to the person and help them find their own answers to problems, without judgement.
Importantly, she emphasizes individuals can refer themselves for counselling which means they don’t have to go via their GP.
The charity sees people from all over the Vale and beyond. The criteria is as long as they can get to the Church Street hub as all the sessions take place in person.
Sally, who has worked at EDMHSS for 25 years, said: “The new year is a chance to make a new start and an opportunity to address unresolved issues with talking therapies.
“I would urge people not to let their demons determine their future but to seek support. It’s really okay to talk.”
Although Blue Monday isn’t actually real there are many reasons why people could be feeling low in January. This could be because of the lower levels of daylight which can lead to depression, worries about finances or unhappiness in the workplace.
“Many individuals who have come for counselling have credited it with turning their lives around,” she added.
The organisation originally started off in 1973 as part of the national health charity MIND before it went independent in 2012. Sally calls it a ‘hidden gem’.
All of its counsellors are trained and it is advised that a course of six sessions provides the best outcome.
Each individual one costs between £20 and £35 depending on employment status.
Anyone needing support should call 01386 429454 to book an or visit edmhss.org for more information.
