The restoration of historic buildings is the subject of the next Vale of Evesham Civic Society talk by Michael Hodges, chair of Pershore Civic Society on Tuesday, October 8.

Titled ‘Conservation, Restoration, Preservation’ the illustrated lecture starts at 7.30pm and takes place at Ecgwin’s Club, 117 High Street.

Michael, a member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, will be giving an illustrated talk about the restoration projects in which he has been involved during the course of his career.

These range from the £36m restoration of St Martin-in-the-Fields in Trafalgar Square, London to more humble projects in Broadway’s High Street and Pershore’s Bridge Street.

He said: “ The challenge with all projects of this nature is to ensure the purposeful ongoing life of the building into its next chapter of existence. To conserve without regard to future usefulness is folly.”

Since retiring Michael has restored and sold several listed buildings in the Cotswolds, Bath and West Country. He is a member of the Pershore Place Board and also chair of the Friends of Pershore Abbey.

The Vale of Evesham Civic Society was formed in 1972 and has a special interest in ensuring that the heritage of Evesham is kept safe for future generations.
