RUGBY UNION - Women's contact rugby returns to Pershore after 20 years

WOMEN’S contact rugby returned to Pershore for the first time in two decades last weekend when Pershore Phoenix hosted Fairford Vixens in a competitive 15-a-side fixture.

Many months of training paid off in the opening exchanges as Pershore, captained by Nadia White, showed they meant business despite 13 players making their debuts.

And Pershore scored the game’s first trey when scrum-half Karus Robinson crossed after long periods of possession and some excellent support play.

Pershore scored their second try when hooker Donna Trendall dotted down with fly-half Evie Woodfield adding the extras.

However, Fairford responded with a try of their own only for Pershore’s Rose Willmott to crash over the line for a converted score.

The visitors responded with one final try but were unable to strike again as Pershore claimed an impressive 19-10 victory, cheered on by a crowd which featured all sections of the club, family and friends and members of the original ladies Contact team from 30 years ago

This created an electric atmosphere at Piddle Park with several women in the crowd inspired by the match to come and give the sport a try.

Ladies contact training is open to all newcomers at Pershore Rugby every Monday and Wednesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm whilst Men’s XV training takes place on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s, starting at 7pm.

Touch rugby for women and men takes place on Wednesday’s at 7.30pm.
