Why using the wrong number plate could land you in hot water

MAJOR changes to number plates are coming into effect from today (Tuesday) and motorists need to be aware of the moves.

Cars registered will now be given a 22 tag instead of the current 71. March registrations had previously had numbers in the 60s before the recent tick over into the 70s.

Meanwhile new plates for cars and vans will be made from new and tougher material which should be more resistant to damage and abrasion – cutting the frustation facing drivers who have to replace the plates even in the event of minor damage

Number plates can now only display solid black lettering – two-tone plates which use different shades to create a 3D effect are now banned.

According to travel and traffic experts, Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras will be able to read number players more easily with solid black lettering.
