Evesham youngsters gather as town remembers the fallen

YOUNGSTERS from four Evesham schools were among those attending the Royal Air Force Association’s Battle of Britain parade and ceremony at the Waterside Cemetery.

More than 80 pupils from the De Montfort School, Bengeworth CE Academy, Swan Lane First School and St Andrews CE First School along with their teachers and helpers attended the parade last Wednesday (September 15).

Members of ex-service organisations and standard bearers from the Royal Air Force Association, the Royal British Legion, and the Pershore and District branch of the Royal Naval Association were also present alongside Georgina Britten-Long, deputy Lord Lieutenant of Worcestershire and civic guests including the chairman of Wychavon District Council Coun Robert Raphael, Diana Raphael and Mayor of Evesham Coun Sue Amor.

Town council representatives Andrew Dyke, Emma Haynes and Mark Goodge were in attendance alongside Alan Booth, chairman of the Evesham branch of the Royal British Legion, and Jenny Johnson, chair of the town’s branch of the Royal Air Force Association.




RAF veteran Jeff Brereton, 100, was on hand for the ceremony officiated by the Rev Mark Binney, with the Last Post and Reville played by Sue Sollis BEM.

The parade was led by Danny Rollinson, chairman of the Bretforton branch of the Royal British Legion, while Mrs Britten-Long laid a wreath before pupils placed crosses on graves.
