SHOPPERS and visitors to the heart of Evesham heard from members of the town’s Labour party as soapbox campaigning in the traditional style returned to Market Square.
At the street stall speakers reinforced recent drives for better local bus services and maintain services at Evesham Hospital. The campaign to urge everyone to register to vote in the forthcoming General Election was also given prominence.
Party members gave out Labour Party ‘pledge cards’ and talked through the pledges which include free school meals for all primary school children, a ‘real living wage’ of £10 an hour for all workers, including 16 to 21 year olds.
Campaigners heard concerns over the demand for family food parcels which has reportedly risen.
One of the speakers, Helen Russell, said: “We felt we needed to talk directly to people at this crucial time, to bring a message of hope.
“The damage done to our society by years of austerity must be healed by a Labour government for the many and not the few.”
