Car charger network is vital says MP

PERSHORE’S MP Harriett Baldwin has urged local councils to improve the electric car charger network as the Government moves towards fully hybrid motors.

As part of the ‘net zero’ emissions strategy, the Government has said no new traditional engine cars will be sold after 2040.

More and more new cars have a hybrid engine using a mix of electric and petrol power but as part of the national strategy, local authorities have been urged to improve the number of car charging points.

The Government has committed £1.5billion of investment as part of its ‘Road to Zero’ strategy and confirmed that currently 1,000 new charging points are being installed across the UK each month.

Mrs Baldwin has written to Worcestershire County Council, Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council asking for updates on how it plans to use its public spaces to increase the number of car charging points.

“There are a couple of charging points at my own office in Malvern Hills Science Park, but we do need many more across the county,” she said.

“The electric car community is already vibrant in Malvern and Morgan Motors won significant investment to build up its electric motor capability.

“I’m sure many more motorists can be persuaded to make the swap if the charging network is enhanced.”
