Winter League takes centre stage

WITH the mild spell of weather continuing, Broadway Golf Club’s ladies enjoyed round two of their Winter League contest.

The greensomes match was played over 16 holes, with both players in the pairs competition having the opportunity to drive, choose the best of the two shots and then play alternately to the green.

Liz Smith and partner Veronica Rudd found the format to their liking as they brought in an excellent 30 points to seal first place.

Matching the impressive score but losing out on countback were second-placed Lin Everitt and Debbie Donoghue, ahead of third-placed Judith Noyce and Camilla Haines with 27 points.

Janet Sandalls and Juliet Enderby also achieved 27 points to finish fourth on countback.

FORTY-NINE men’s pairs competed in the weekend’s second round of the Winter League.

As the klaxon sounded for the shotgun start, the showers began, but as the morning progressed some glorious autumnal sunshine made a welcome appearance.

Despite the damp start, the course still played superbly, giving all teams some excellent scoring opportunities in the betterball contest.

This was ably demonstrated by Mark Rennie and James Waterhouse who scored a fine 46 points to seal victory.

Callum Millard and Richard Craig shared the score but were second on countback, leaving Duncan Spittle and Russell Payne third with 45.

In fourth place were Paul Whelan and Sam McPherson who earned 44 points.

Both ladies’ and men’s teams now look forward to their third round Winter League competitions later in the month.
