British Summer Championships beckon for inspired Gearey

Evesham Editorial 10th Jul, 2018   0

EVESHAM’S Will Gearey is all smiles after qualifying for this year’s British Summer Swimming Championships in Sheffield.

Only the top 24 British swimmers are invited to attend the championships, which begin on July 24, and Gearey will be hoping to get on the podium – as he did in 2017 – when he competes in the 15-year age group (age end of year).

The Prince Henry’s High School pupil, who swims for Worcester SC, has qualified in the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m fly and will be hoping to make finals at the very least.

Going into the championships, his highest ranked event is sixth in the 50m freestyle (25.18). In 2017, he won a bronze medal in the boys’ 13/14-year-old 50m fly final – his first at national level.

He has also qualified for the English Home Nations Championships, which will be held the week after the British, and will be targeting a medal in the 100m fly.

Gearey has enjoyed a very successful season so far, winning multiple golds at the 2018 West Midlands Championships and sweeping the board in his age group at the County Championships earlier in the year.

In the last 12 months, he has also been selected to represent both the West Midlands at ESSA National Schools’ Championship and Worcestershire at the National Inter-Counties Championships and invited on to the World Talent Identification Programme for Modern Pentathlon.
