Evesham archers are flying high in the rankings

AFTER a long and sometimes blustery outdoor season, Evesham Archery Club ladies’ members have found themselves among the top ranking archers in the country.

Over the season archers are able to submit their score from qualifying rounds at Record Status competitions to be placed on the National rankings list.

Once an archer has competed in enough of the qualifying rounds, their scores are added together to form a total and this total is then listed against all other archers in the country.

Evesham archers did well and Sally Gilder, shooting in the ladies’ recurve category, was placed seventh in the country.

Jacquie Holmes, shooting the ladies’ compound, is placed tenth and Harriet Fletcher, shooting the junior ladies’ compound, placed 12th.

However, the club’s success is not restricted to female members, as ten-year-old Alex Shehata-Morgan is ranked joint third in the boys’ under 12 recurve.

He is also the West Midlands regional champion and Worcestershire county champion for boys’ under 12 recurve despite having only been shooting competitively since April.

At the West Midlands Archery Society & County of Worcester Archery Association (WMAS & CWAA) Junior Championships, Shehata-Morgan, Rohan Hewitt, Freija Guntripp and Fletcher all handled the tricky conditions well to complete the shoot.

Shehata-Morgan won gold in the boys’ recurve Bristol 4 class with a personal best score of 1,074 and Hewitt took silver in the same class with 984.

Guntripp scored 880 in the girls’ recurve Bristol 5 and Fletcher won the WMAS & CWAA compound championships with a personal best score of 1,270.

To cap a successful day, the quartet combined to win the county team trophy.

An Evesham Archery Club spokesman said: “In a highly competitive sport, to have so many of our archers ranking high in these categories is very exciting indeed.

“Congratulations to all who made the rankings and hopefully next year will see another successful season for Evesham Archery Club.”
