Police issue bogus insurer warning

Evesham Editorial 23rd Oct, 2017   0

POLICE have warned Vale residents to beware of rogue companies masquerading as genuine insurers or utility firms.

It follows one incident in which a Warwickshire resident received an unexpected phone call from a business she believed she already had an insurance policy with to cover a household appliance.

The bogus caller then told her he was calling to renew the policy and claimed the business had changed its name, so the policy details would be different.

It turned out the cold caller was calling from a completely separate business.

In a similar case, one resident believed she was speaking to her broadband provider, Sky, when in reality she was talking to a completely different trader who was trying to sell her insurance for her Sky devices, costing almost £250.

West Mercia Police is now reminding Vale residents to never discuss any insurance policy or service provider contract with a cold caller.

If a resident believes the call to be genuine, phone back on a publicly listed telephone number.

To make a scam or rogue trader complaint to Trading Standards call 03454 040506.
