A DRAKES Broughton school is hoping to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help project.

St Barnabas CE First and Middle School is now in contention to win thousands of pounds after being announced as one of three projects on the shortlist.

The Tesco Bags of Help scheme sees grants of £5000, £2,000 and £1,000 raised through the 5p bag levy awarded to outdoor community projects.

Residents will decide which project is awarded the top grant by voting in Tesco stores in Pershore and Worcester.

Staff and pupils at the Drakes Broughton school are hoping to win the cash to develop a spiritual garden where children, staff, family and friends of the school and members of the community can sit quietly and enjoy the peace and calm of natural surroundings.

Pupils have already worked hard to design the garden – which will include an array of plants to stimulate the senses and natural seating areas – and the school is also hoping to work with a local artist to create some art for the garden.

Headteacher Paul Kilgallon said: “We would ask as many people as possible to vote for our project.

“It is very important for us, as a school, to be able to provide for the emotional and spiritual well-being of our students and we would love to see our beautiful students’ designs come into fruition for the community to enjoy.”

Voting in stores has already opened and closes on Saturday, February 25. Customers cast their votes by using a token given to them at the check-out in store each time they shop.
