Sharps claim top spot as Valerie is remembered

ROB and PENNY SHARP were victorious on home soil in the Valerie Gittings Trophy contest staged at The Vale Golf Club on Sunday.

The annual mixed open competition was again played in memory of Valerie, a founder member of The Vale who died of breast cancer.

Each year her husband Alan Gittings presents the prizes and, as usual, the competition was a huge success as players entered from all over the West Midlands.

Meanwhile, a raffle raised £401 for breast cancer research.

The Sharps topped the pile with 45 points, with Ian Shipway and Victoria Westgarth of Windlesham runners-up with 44 points.

In third place were Geoff and Diana Webb of Stratford with 43 points and fourth were David Rigby and Janice Brown of Cotswold Hills and The Vale with 42 points, ahead of fifth placed Derek and Debbie Spencer of The Warwickshire on countback.

Jim Beardmore of Brickhampton was nearest the pin for the men and Pat Martin of The Vale was likewise for the ladies.

Longest drive for the men came from David Rigby of Cotswold Hills and for the ladies it was The Vale’s Sally Smith.
