STAFF and volunteers at a National Trust site near Pershore celebrated The Queen’s 90th birthday by lighting a beacon in her honour.

Croome was the location of one of more than 1,000 beacons that were lit throughout the country to celebrate Her Majesty’s landmark birthday on Thursday (April 21).

The evening began with everyone singing the national anthem followed by a special message from The Prince of Wales, which was read out by Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Lad Morrison.

The honour of lighting Croome’s beacon was undertaken by the 13th Earl of Coventry, before volunteers, staff and local residents broke into a rousing chorus of ‘happy birthday’.

Michael Forster-Smith, Croome’s general manager said: “It’s fantastic to be part of such an important milestone in the Queen’s life and we’re delighted to be able to share in the celebrations.”

Pageantmaster Bruno Peek said, “It has been an enormous privilege to be able to organise this amazing community event to celebrate the 90th birthday of Her Majesty. I was delighted to see so many different organisations playing their part.”

Croome’s park and lakeside are open from 10am to 5.30pm and Croome Court is open from 11am to 4.30pm every day.
