Abbey Bridge traffic lights a 'pain' - councillor claims

A LEADING Evesham councillor has called for county transport chiefs to look again at the lights on the Abbey Bridge and labelled them ‘a pain’.

Coun Ken Barclay, who represents Evesham South on Wychavon District Council, told the Observer the right turn from Cheltenham Road onto Waterside needs to be looked at as only a few vehicles can make it through at any one time.

The traffic situation in Evesham is being looked at by Worcestershire County Council after they announced earlier this year that a £100,000 traffic study would be carried out to see how the town’s road network and traffic flow could be improved.

Coun Barclay said he has received a number of complaints from residents about the traffic lights.

“Trying to turn right from Cheltenham Road to go along Waterside is difficult and that of course should be looked at,” Coun Barclay said.

“It is such a pain if you’re trying to turn right, he added.

However, highways chiefs appeared to disagree with Coun Barclay’s comments and backed the current light sequence.

A Worcestershire County Council spokesperson said: “We will keep the operation of these traffic lights under review.

“However they are currently operating as efficiently as possible regarding both traffic flow and pedestrian movement across all arms of the junction.”
