Firms back bid to keep the town tidy

A CRACKDOWN to keep Evesham town centre free from rubbish has been backed by nearly 100 per cent of businesses on the town’s High Street.

Shops in the town centre have pledged to keep the outside of their premises free from litter and will encourage their customers to help in the Litter Free

Campaign being run by Evesham Town and Wychavon District Council’s.

Businesses who have joined the campaign will display a signed certificate and a sticker in their windows to show they are taking part.

And it’s now hoped shops which haven’t already made the pledge will join the fight to keep Evesham’s streets free from litter.

The Vale of Evesham Civic Society also played their part in cleaning up the town as they held a litter picking event along the River Avon last Sunday, with 20 volunteers bagging up rubbish left behind following the high river levels.

Gary Tyler, Manager of Bradford’s Carpet and Bedding Centre, one of the shops that have signed the pledge, said: “We all need to do our bit to look clean, to get shop fronts looking smart and our displays looking tidy.

“It’s part of creating the visual image of Evesham and attracting more people in to the town.

“The campaign can only enhance the reputation we have.”

Coun Ken Barclay, who represents Evesham South on Wychavon District Council, said: “Evesham’s Anti Litter Pledge has been very successful in gaining almost 100 per cent cooperation from businesses in Evesham’s town centre.

“It’s a simple idea, but a lot of people think it is a great idea.

“I can see signs of improvements happening already,” he added
