ARMED Forces Day celebrations began at Wychavon District Council with a flag raising ceremony.
Chairman of Wychavon, Coun Val Wood, hosted the event on Monday (June 22) at Pershore’s Civic Centre to recognise the contribution made by the military community.
Cadets, ex-military personnel, members of the Royal British Legion and civic guests all gathered around Wychavon’s flag pole and after prayers, blessings and the Last Post, there was a minute’s silence followed by the flag being raised.
Coun Wood said: “Raising a flag for Armed Forces Day reminds us of the sacrifices and contribution made by the military community both serving and retired.”
Danny Shea, of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association, said: “As a veteran of HM Forces, I feel it is important to make the public aware of the job our forces and ex-forces are doing and have done over many years.
“Armed Forces Day gives everyone a chance to reflect and give thanks to our current servicemen and women and the support they get from their families.”
