TRIBUTES were paid to the armed forces as Wychavon raised a flag at a ceremony in Pershore.

Coun Lynne Duffy, chairman of Wychavon, hosted the event at the Civic Centre on Monday (June 23) to mark Armed Forces Day, which recognises the contribution made by the military community.

Cadets, former military personal, members of the Royal British Legion and civic guests gathered around the flag pole and after prayers and the Last Post, there was a minutes silence.

Coun Duffy said: “Raising a flag for Armed Forces Day helps us recognise the sacrifice and contribution made by the military community both serving and retired.

“In the year when, as a nation, we commemorate the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landing and the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War, it’s more important than ever to reflect on these contributions past and present.”

The flag will fly until Armed Forces Day, tomorrow (Saturday).
