Booze ban proposed for Workman Gardens

Evesham Editorial 26th Mar, 2015 Updated: 20th Oct, 2016   0

DRINKING alcohol in a popular Evesham park could be banned after legal proceedings against the act were kick-started.

The first major step forward towards the ban in Workman Gardens has moved a step closer following an order from Wychavon District Council.

Residents had raised concerns to the council about drinking and anti-social behaviour in the Waterside site and subsequently the council has taken action.

Jack Hegarty, managing director at Wychavon, said: “If the order is granted it will be a criminal offence to drink alcohol in Workman Gardens and designated Wychavon officers, police, and CSO’s will have the power to seize alcohol with failure to

comply resulting in a fine of up to £100.

“We hope residents will be pleased with this progress.”

If it is passed, the order will come into force on April 3 and residents can visit www.wychavon.gov.uk/workmangardens for more information.

David Hemming, community safety manager at Wychavon, added: “We hope this measure will discourage people from

drinking in Workman Gardens.

“When the police monitored anti-social behaviour they reported it as low within the area, but there was certainly still a fear in the community associated with the consumption of alcohol and we hope this will address that.”
