Rotary paper project raises cash

A BOLD bid to link up Evesham’s two bridges fell short but raised a staggering £2,200 for various local causes.

The Rotary Club of Evesham hoped to create a paper chain to link the new Abbey Bridge with the old Workman Bridge.

A fun packed day saw the paper chain cover half of the 876 metres needed and Rotary members hope to pass the figure with their next attempt.

‘Bridge the Gap’ was supported by eight local schools including Simon De Montfort Middle School, Prince Henry’s and Fladbury First School and organisations such as Working World, Evesham Sea Cadets and Ourside Youth Centre.

A number of local businesses such as Cartridge World, Timothy Lee and Griffiths, Vale Balloons and Word of Mouth Cafe also dug deep to support the community-themed project.

Town mayor Coun Charlie Homer showed his support on the day alongside Rotary members and representatives from local groups.

About half of the £2,200 raised will go to the schools to support their own local charity or towards a school project.

The remainder of the cash will help the Rotary Club of Evesham support many local children’s events including Kids-Out and a trip to the pantomime.
