Les James Challenge Cup
PERSHORE Town were knocked out of the Les James Challenge Cup at the Winstanley King George V Stadium on Saturday by Midland Football League Division One rivals Southam, whose goals were scored by ex-Town players Louis Bridges and Chris Bright who bagged a brace.
Pershore played some good passing football in the first half and were unlucky not to be leading by the time Bridges’ shot from 15 yards opened the scoring for the visitors.
Town equalised when captain Craig Connor beat the full back and pulled the ball back from the byline for Connor Trotman to finish from close range, but parity only lasted a couple of minutes before Bright scored for Southam with a left-footed strike in the box.
Town had an ideal chance to equalise when Joe Robinson was brought down in the box, but Joe Walsh’s penalty was saved by Southam’s keeper.
Bright then scored from close range in the 65th minute after pouncing on Andrew Yarnold’s save to give Town an uphill battle, which was made more difficult when Matt Chambers received a red card for a rash challenge.
Despite Town’s good football, Southam’s clinical finishing was the difference between the teams.
Pershore are in league action at Cadbury Athletic on Saturday.
