Town secure welcome victory

PERSHORE Town exited the Worcestershire Senior Urn as they were beaten 3-0 by higher ranked visitors Lye Town on Tuesday.

Lye, third in the Midland League Premier Division, had too much for their hosts who ply their trade a division below.

Pershore, who rested several key players who were carrying knocks, started well as Ben Lane shot over the bar when well placed and Sean Cooke’s effort was deflected wide.

However, the visitors’ slick passing and movement created chances and Lye took the lead after nine minutes when, with Pershore having lost the ball in midfield, Jack Till got into the penalty area and fired home.

The lead was extended on 30 minutes when a ball was crossed into the box and evaded the Pershore defence, allowing Matt Johnson to prod home from close range.

Ben Billingham’s strike made it 3-0 after 58 minutes.

Pershore travel to Stafford Town on Saturday for a Division One fixture, the first match on the hosts’ new 4G pitch.

ON SATURDAY Town picked up a second league win of the campaign as they defeated fellow strugglers Studley 4-0.

Hosts Town controlled the match and it was little surprise when they opened the scoring on 25 minutes.

Ben Lane slipped the ball through to Sean Cooke who placed it past the advancing Shaun Edwards, Town’s former keeper.

Louis Bridges increased the lead ten minutes later with a cross that looped over the keeper into the net at the back post.

The second half was much the same as the first as Town created chances.

Further goals came late in the match when Will Gayton completed a quickfire brace in the 85th and 88th minutes.

Firstly, having been put through by Ciaran Gilbert, Gayton finished a one-on-one with the keeper before striking again when, having collected the ball wide, he beat his defender and scored at the second attempt.
